First there was the Maserati GranTurismo, then the GranTurismo S, and mostly recently the track-hardened MC Stradale. But if your ideal big Italian GT sits somewhere between the GranTurismo S and MC Stradale then Maserati now has the car for you.

And this new Maserati GranTurismo model is...?

Well, it’s not so much a model as a tasty option for the UK’s best-selling Maserati model, the GranTurismo S Automatic. For £3840 you can spec the new Sport Pack, which ups to total cost of your new Maser to £92,480.

Hyundai i30 (2012): the first official rendering

Hyundai will show its new i30 family hatch at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show. This first rendering show the new 2012 i30 for the first time - are we alone in detecting more than a hint of Vauxhall Astra in profile?
The i30 is Hyundai's Golf and Focus rival and is Hyundai's biggest selling model in Europe.

What's new for the 2012 Hyundai i30?

They're not about to mess with a winning formula. This first design rendering suggests the new i30 will continue where the old one left off: a neat, inoffensive, European flavour, matched by quality build and attractive pricing and equipment levels. Not to mention the longest warranty on offer in Europe.
Why so European? Because Hyundai - and Kia - realised that to compete properly in Europe, rather than peddle the Korean tat from the 1980s and 1990s, it had to sell cars aimed at the local market.
That's why the new Hyundai i30 - like the old one - is being engineered in Russelsheim, Germany (ironically, in the Astra's home town) and built in eastern Europe.

This is the new Suzuki Swift Sport, a lovely little hot (well, warm) hatch that will be officially revealed at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show in September. And you can forget about the current crop of turbocharged and big power-chasing hot hatches – this Swift Sport uses a naturally aspirated engine good for just 134bhp…

Subaru will show its new Qashqai rival, the XV, at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show. Not that you would have guessed it from this frustrating teaser sketch issued today.
Parent firm Fuji Heavy Industries confirmed the Subaru crossover will be shown on 13 September at the IAA German show - five months after the concept waded in at the 2011 Shanghai show.

Subaru XV: sounds like a rugby team!

Yes, but those roman numerals don't signify the number of seats; this will remain a five-seater.
'The XV is a rival for the Ford Kuga and Nissan Qashqai,' Subaru's then UK managing director Paul Tunnicliffe told CAR in May 2011. 'It's four-wheel drive only and we'll offer a 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrols and a 2.0-litre diesel. We are hoping for around 2000 XV sales in a full year.'

Kia is launching a three-door version of the Picanto for the first time. The new entry-level supermini arrives in showrooms on 1 September 2011, priced from £7795.
It's a wedgy, attitudinal hatch designed to broaden the appeal of the Picanto. Rather more cheesily, Kia says 'if the five-door Picanto is the small car, grown up, then the three-door is the same but with a twinkle in its eye.'

Kia Picanto 3dr: the background

The Koreans have faultless logic behind launching a three-door Picanto. It forecasts global demand for A-segment city cars to hit 2.4 million by 2014.
Yet within a year, that'll hit 3.3m by 2015 - and a third of those will be three-door city cars.
In the UK, city car buyers are split 55:45 in favour of five-doors.

Lotus will show the most sporting, toughest Evora yet - the GTE Road Car Concept - at the 2011 Pebble Beach car show this week.
As the name implies, it's borne out of the Evora GTE race programme, which sees Lotus's mid-engined 2+2 compete at races across the globe, culminating in the 24-hour race at Le Mans.

Lotus GTE Road Car Concept: the details

The roadgoing GTE show car has 420bhp from its race-fettled V6 petrol engine, driving through a sequential gearbox. A Lotus spokeswoman confirmed it was the roadgoing model's Toyota V6 modded to produce a wodge more power.

A new British car company will launch at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show - Eterniti Motors - and its first car will be a luxury crossover.
Incredibly, the new bespoke manufacturer will be based in London, where it says it will design and assemble its new top-end cars.
The first model, which doesn't have a name yet, will be a crossover in the mould of the Lagonda SUV: a £150,000-200,000 luxury 4x4, based on the mechanicals of a mainstream crossover. We're not sure who yet, but who'd bet against the innards of a Range Rover/BMW X5/Merc ML?

This is the Audi Urban Concept Spyder - the roofless version of Audi's radical city car, due to bow in at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show.
There's not much else to say about this Audi: it's the same as the coupe shown earlier this month, but with a low, continuous window area and doors that open diagonally to the top.

Audi Urban Concept Spyder: the lowdown

It's a tiny two-seat runabout powered by two electric motors. How do two people fit into this slip of a car? By sitting in a 1+1 tandem layout, like on the Caparo T1.
The Audi concept is made from a mix of carbonfibre reinforced plastic and aluminium.
The full details will be issued nearer the Frankfurt motor show. Stay tuned for more.

Jaguar C-X16 concept (2011)

Jaguar C-X16 concept (2011) the first official sketch

This is Jaguar’s new sub-XK sports car. As we revealed back in 2009, Jaguar is working on an all-new small sports car, nicknamed the XE, to compete with Porsche’s best – and this is it.
This official design sketch teases the concept car (dubbed C-X16, the hybrid supercar concept isthat will appear at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show in September.

What do we know about the Jaguar C-X16 concept?

Jaguar is keeping mum on most of the details – it’ll announce more at the Frankfurt show – but we scooped a lot of the information two years ago.
Underneath the almost-certainly-gorgeous body will be a lightweight aluminium platform with a front/mid-engined layout, and V6 petrol engines (in 275bhp naturally aspirated or 350bhp supercharged forms) sending power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.
The drop-top comes first in 2013, while coupe and R versions arrive by 2015. And that means the next XK is pushed more upmarket.

Kia's M5 rival: 2011 four-door sports saloon concept

This is Kia's M5 rival. Sound crazy? You bet. But this is a 5-series sized concept in the mould of the Korean-market K7, complete with rear-wheel drive and a V8 powertrain.
Okay, perhaps it's more akin to an Audi A7 or 5-series GT in its fastback bodystyle. One person in the office even mentioned the Aston Martin Rapide, until they woke up and slunk off with their tail between their legs.
There's no name yet - this is a teaser at this stage - but we'll see this Kia concept car at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show on 13 September 2011.

So Kia's going M5-baiting?

Hardly. This is an 'ideas concept', not a thinly veiled production car. Insiders suggest it points to the next iteration of Kia's design language, after styling chief Peter Schreyer's first generation of change which took Kia's mainstream cars from also-rans to genuine contenders.
'No matter from which perspective you look at it – this concept car is roaring with energy and ready for take-off,' said Schreyer, cheesily. 'I believe the car is a strong statement from Kia: we are ready to fast forward to an all new chapter.'
That's an allusion to the next round of new models coming. The Ceed, for instance, is remembered as the car that put Kia on the map in Europe. But the pace of change is such that the Ceed will itself be replaced in spring 2012.

Volkswagen Up (2012): first photos of VW's mini

Almost four years to the day after we first saw the VW Up concept car, Volkswagen is unveiling the real thing: this is the new VW Up city car, on sale in UK dealers in spring 2012.
Forget the official, trendily informal name 'up!'. I'm afraid CAR's going to overrule the grammatical violations and call it the good old Volkswagen Up.

It certainly looks very similar to the VW Up concept car

Indeed it does. The exterior style of Volkswagen's baby, which replaces the Fox, remains intact. Just this three-door will be launched next spring, probably in time for the new '12' reg in March.
Prices in Germany will start at €8950, pointing to a UK cost around £8000.
A five-door will follow, and the flow of concept cars – such as the Space Up – points to future derivatives. Not for nothing is this new range called the New Small Family; the Up will indeed form the basis of a suite of small Volkswagens for global sale.

Volkswagen Up: in detail

The Up is well packaged: at just 3540mm long and 1640mm wide, it's short, yet this is a full four-seater, thanks to a wheelbase as near as damn it identical to the Polo's, at 2420mm between the axles.
Just look at the minimal overhangs to understand the packaging. And VW engineers are proud of the boot space on board: at 251 litres with the seats up, it's usefully larger than the Aygo/C1/107 competition – and swells to 951 litres with the back seats folded.
