While we're always happy to see automakers offering manual gearboxes on their vehicles, truth is, most consumers in the States prefer not to change gears by themselves, especially when it comes to mainstream models like the Chevrolet Sonic (sold as the Aveo in Europe).

When Chevrolet first introduced the Sonic with the 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, it was available exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Now, GM has added the option of a 6-speed automatic.

“Providing the option of a turbocharged engine to our non-stick driving Chevy customers allows us to offer everyone the thrill and power of a fuel-efficient Ecotec 1.4L powerplant,” said Jim Danahy, vehicle chief engineer for North American small cars.

With the stick shift, the Sonic 1.4L Turbo goes from zero to 60mph (96km/h) in 7.8 seconds while returning an EPA-estimated 40 mpg (5.9lt/100km) on the highway and 29 mpg (8.1lt/100km) in the city.

The automatic model is both slightly slower needing about 8.0 seconds for the 0-60mph sprint and less fuel efficient at 37 mpg highway (6.4lt/100km) and 27 mpg (8.7lt/100km) in the city.

Pricing details for the automatic transmission option have yet to be announced.
